Blue Joint Grass Is a Beautiful Ornamental Grass With Striking Feathery Plumes

Calamagrostis canadensis is a versatile and hardy ornamental grass that can be found in many gardens and landscaping projects across North America. Gardeners prize its distinctive blue-green foliage and airy plumes of flowers. This perennial is hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 4 to 9 and can grow in full sun or partial shade

Blue Joint Grass is well-suited for planting in natural settings, including meadows, wildflower gardens, and rock gardens. It is also lovely to edge paths, borders, or to add height to the back of a mixed border.

The grass is also a great option for planting near water, such as the embankments of streams, lakes, and ponds, where it can provide a natural and attractive transition from water to land. It is a fantastic shoreline stabilizer.

Blue Joint Grass Has Natural Charm and Does Not Demand Much of Your Time

The stems of Blue Joint Grass reach an average height of three to six feet tall and are thin, erect, and slightly flexible. The leaves are flat, narrow, and have a blue-green color that contrasts beautifully with the flowers.

The flowers are produced in late summer to early fall and are held in feathery plumes that can reach up to two feet long. They are light green when they first emerge and then turn to a light beige or straw color as they mature.

Calamagrostis Canadensis tolerates a wide range of soil types, as long as the soil is well-drained. Watering requirements are moderate, only about an inch to two per week. To maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth, it can be cut back in early spring before new growth appears.

Calamagrostis Canadensis Helps Support a Healthier Environment

Besides its ornamental value, Blue Joint Grass provides several environmental benefits. For example, it provides important habitat and food sources for a variety of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and other insects.

The grass also helps to prevent soil erosion and reduces the amount of stormwater runoff in a landscape, helping to improve the overall health of aquatic ecosystems. These benefits make it very attractive to add to your landscape for gardeners who struggle with erosion or want to attract critters.
