 Why Southern Magnolia Reigns Supreme

Few trees scream “Southern charm” quite like the Southern Magnolia tree. Native to the southeastern U.S., this beauty tree offers large, fragrant white flowers and evergreen, deep green leaves that maintain their rich color and texture year-round. It’s also an especially popular choice for homeowners who love Southern style and look for beauty, permanence, and native adaptability in their yard or landscape.

An Evergreen Highly Fragrant Tree

Southern Magnolias are showstoppers in the spring and summer when the large blooms, the size of dinner plates, burst forth from the tree. The contrast of the white flowers against the green leaves adds visual drama to your landscape. But the appeal of this tree isn’t just for when it’s in flower. With their beautiful, deep green color, large leaves that rustle in the wind, and textured, rusty brown undersides, Southern Magnolia trees add visual interest year-round. They’re a hardy, easy-care landscape anchor that you can count on.

Easy to Grow, Rewarding to Own

In addition to the year-round curb appeal it offers, this tree is especially attractive to homeowners and landscapers because it’s low-maintenance, and established trees can handle heat and moderate drought well. Plant in well-draining dirt with plenty of sun, and you’ll have a hardy, dependable tree that’s perfect as a specimen or in rows to provide natural screening and privacy for your yard. The Southern Magnolia is your ticket to Southern-style structure and soul, whether you’re looking to boost your curb appeal or create a more natural, wildlife-friendly landscape.

Care

Southern Magnolia is easy to maintain once established. It requires deep watering during the first year .

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.
