Cedar Tree 2-3' Description

Cedar, Cedrus is a Genus of Coniferous Trees in the Pinaceae Family

Cedar, more formally known as Cedrus, is a genus of coniferous trees in the family Pinaceae native to the mountains of the western Himalayas and the Mediterranean region, occurring at staggering altitudes of a thousand to three thousand and two hundred meters above sea level. They usually grow up to about thirty, forty to sixty meters tall and produce spicy-resinous scented wood, thick-ridged or square-cracked bark, and broad, level branches. With long and dimorphic shoots that form the branches' framework and shorter leaf-carrying shoots, the cedar tree has needle-like evergreen leaves that grow up to eight to sixty millimeters long; their arrangement depends on the length of the nodes. The foliage colors may vary, from a light grass-green and a dark green to a strongly glaucous greyish-green that may look blue in specific amounts of light; these colors depend on the thickness of the protective wax layer keeps the leaves from desiccating. Its cones are barrel-shaped, around six to twelve centimeters long and three to eight centimeters broad, and they slowly darken from green to greyish brown as they mature.

Cedar Trees and Cedrus are Excellent Windbreakers

The cedar is a name that generalizes its subspecies, as there are many distinct species of these large, fast-growing, coniferous evergreen trees. But because of their towering size, they are not typically found in gardens and are usually seen lining streets, parks, or anywhere with a spacious environment. Cedar trees, however, are excellent windbreakers and are suitable on large pieces of property to add a living point of interest.

Growth from seeds is possible if they undergo a forty-eight-hour soaking period and another month in the refrigerator, along with moist potting soil in a container, ideally a Ziploc bag. You can relocate the seeds into paper cups and compost and potting mixture for at least after a month; you must place cups on a sunny window, and potting soil must remain evenly moist. Once these seedlings are six inches tall, plant the seedlings outside, specifically in a mainly sunny location, and make sure they are no less than five feet apart.

The young tree must have a two-inch layer of mulch around it without touching the trunk to prevent moisture loss and protect its structure. Using a wire cage may also help prevent the tree from any injury caused by mechanical devices, and young trees may require a covering of landscape fabric. Once the tree matures, cedar tree care barely involves maintenance besides regular mulching and removal of dead or diseased branches.
