Description
Red Trillium, Trillium Erectum is a Wood Prominent Perennial Herb
Native to North America but now having thirty-nine species in the US and Canada, this perennial herb brings balance and beauty to any landscape. It is most prominent in wooded areas. Hardy in zones 4 to 8 grows 1-1.5 feet upward and spreads over a three-foot area.
The crimson bloom of Trillium erectum lasts for up to 3 weeks before giving way to fleshy berry-like fruit. Birds and mammals eat the berries. Humans should not eat any part of this plant, nor should any other herbivores. The plant has a very offensive odor yet flies, and insects are drawn to it. The flower's three petals are a vibrant reddish maroon color with long slim stalks. The flower is easily identified in the woods by its three hanging or "nodding" petals around 3 inches in diameter. Picking the flowers from this plant may not be the best idea as this tends to stress the plant for seven years.
Red Trillium, Trillium Erectum is Beneficial to Birds and Mammals
The plant requires the land to be humus-rich with a pH of 6.8or. Conditionally, this plant reared in a location where it will receive ample sun in early spring. Patience is indeed a virtue of having, since the plant can live for up to thirty years but doesn't reach maturity for blooming until its fifteenth year. Red Trillium is beneficial to birds and mammals. However, it is used medicinally in childbirth and alternative medicine practices. Historically Native Americans founded this flower grinding it into a powder to aid women in giving birth. They called it "birthroot," this is just one of a vast array of names for the Red Trillium.
