Snow Hill Hydrangea
Hydrangea Arborescens is an extremely popular deciduous, flowering shrub. Its impressive clusters of snowy white flowers bloom reliably every summer. This shrub will thrive in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 through 9. It prefers a full-sun location to produce a generous number of blooms; a partially sunny spot must receive a minimum of 6 hours of filtered light daily.
Snow hill hydrangea originated in the forests of the eastern United States. It loves conditions replicating its native habitat: fertile but moist soil with quick drainage, lots of woody organic material, and room to stretch wide.
Snow Hill Hydrangea Adds Tons of Charm to Your Garden
The most distinguishing characteristic of the snow hill hydrangea is its large, rounded flower. Each snowball-shaped flower comes from dozens of tiny white florets that form to compose a singular, oversized bloom. The fragrance is soft and lovely. Many grow them in a cutting garden, as they make beautiful cut flowers for arrangements.
The shrub has an upright growth habit and can reach 6' to 10' tall with a similar width without occasional trimming. The leaves are a lovely shade of dark green and form an attractive oval shape. If you decide to prune Hydrangea Arborescens, do so after the bloom cycle.
Hydrangea Arborescens Requires Minor Care
Besides the great looks, many plant the snow hill hydrangea because it is so easy to maintain. It's hardy, which means less work for the gardener. It is pest-resistant, heat-tolerant, drought-tolerant, and frost-resistant. Here are a few care requirements:
- Fertilize hydrangeas twice annually, in the spring at the first signs of activity and in the late summer after the flowers fade.
- Deadhead withered flowers so that the plant can continue to grow.
- Provide about 1" of water weekly; you might need to provide more in a hot or dry climate.
- Keep mulch around the base of the shrub, with a 1" gap, so it does not touch it and hold too much moisture.
