Dutchmans Breeches 3 For $12.99 Description

Dutchman's Breeches, Dicentra Cucullaria is a Blooming Perennial

Dutchman Breeches is a perennial plant that likes rich woods for growth. They are native to eastern North America but have a separate population in the Columbia Basin. The tiny blossoms are from 1/2 to 3/4 inches long and grow in the early spring. There are anywhere from 3 to 14 blooms on a stalk ranging from 4 3/4 to 9 3/4 inches in length. Ants spread the seeds of the plant by a process called myrmecochory. The kidney-shaped seeds have a fleshy organ called an elaiosome, which attracts the ants to the plant. They carry the seed back to their nest and eat the elaiosome, and the rest of the seed deposits in the nest debris, from where they germinate.

Due to this process, they grow in a medium rich in ant nest debris. The foliage of this plant is a deep grayish-green basal that is rosette-shaped. The flowers' stems grow out of this rosette and have been equated to a clothesline. When they are blooming, the flowers hang in a row. This perennial can grow in planting zones 3-7. They like partial to full shade with moist soil and need well-drained ground. The acidic land is the best planting medium for these plants, with hummus to provide the necessary nutrients, and they will bloom from March through May.

Dutchmans Breeches, Dicentra Cucullaria Tolerates a Fair Amount of Shade and Frigid Temperature

In exchange, it tolerates a fair amount of shade and frigid temperatures. It withstands winters down to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. This flower also enjoys fertile soils in the middle of the pH range. Once established, this plant bears up to six three-quarters-inch-long flowers on each stalk over two to three weeks. Afterward, the stems die back, and the leaves turn yellow. Through May, the entire plant fades back into the ground to make way for later blooming plants.

These perennials are typically found growing on the edges of forests. Although it is considered a weed, the plant does have many uses. The most common use of this plant is for medicinal purposes. The roots help heal snake bites and stings from bees or wasps. The leaves are used to make teas for bronchitis and colds, though there is no scientific evidence to prove these claims.

Dutchman's breeches for sale are also used as ornamental flowers in gardens worldwide. The flowers are white and star-shaped, similar to dandelions or wildflowers. Some people use this plant to boil young shoots like asparagus or steam them like corn on the cob. However, ingesting dutchman's breeches may cause swelling of the lips and mouth followed by abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Dutchman breeches, also known as harvest pants, have been a mainstay in farming since the early 1900s. Dutchmen's pants are used for work and leisure. They are comfortable and durable. These pants can be worn for work, tight at the ankles, loose at the knees, and baggy at the hips. They increase your body's mobility, ideal for barn chores or farm work. The loose fit allows a person to wear many layers of clothing underneath them on cold days while maintaining mobility.

You can even wear them to school or work if you want to be casual with your attire on a given day.
