Dutchman’s Breeches
Dicentra Cucullaria is a charming perennial wildflower. It is a native species to the United States and is cold-hardy, even in some of our most frigid regions. It will thrive in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 7.
Dutchman's Breeches get this unique name from their petite white flowers, which suspend from a thin green stem. Each blossom appears like a pair of heritage Dutch pants hanging on a clothesline.
Caring for Dutchman's Breeches Plants
This plant prefers partial shade or filtered sunshine. Although it will be a lovely green plant in full shade, the flowers will not bloom without the beneficial sunlight. They also need de-compacted, well-draining, fertile soil and an inch of water weekly.
You will have an excellent plant to enjoy if you find that perfectly part-shade spot to install your Dutchman's Breeches.
Dutchman's Breeches Are a Cottage Garden Classic Flower
These flowers are a long-time favorite, thanks to their casual charm. Install this species in your shade, rock, or cottage garden. You'll undoubtedly enjoy this flower wherever you plant it.
The plant gives your garden great color even when the little breeches are not blooming. The leaves are a cool-toned green with a silvery undertone, can reach up to 6" long, and appear similar to a fern frond. They are full, lush, and very pretty.
The white or cream flowers each have two petals forming the shape of trouser legs...or "breeches."
