Partridge gives it its name and loves the berries; partridge birds flock to make their home in this plant. This plant has been around for many years and holds many medicinal purposes. It has been used to help a woman enter labor, ease stomach cramps, and even aid in headaches.

This perennial is a low-lying plant and a small grower. You can find it growing in vine form or as clumps and clusters. It is also called the squaw vine. The leaves grow in pairs with the vines, giving them a distinct look.

It is a Rubus family member, meaning it has compound leaves. The foliage is glossy and dark green but turns to rich shades of red and burgundy in fall when the leaves turn to their fall colors. The species name repens means creeping and refers to the climbing habit of this plant. Each leaf has five leaflets, which are oval with pointed tips, and each booklet has a single deep vein that runs from its base to its edge.
