Mitchella Repens Is A Stunning Ground-Cover

Mitchella repens is a small flowering plant used for years in traditional medicine. It's also called partridge berry, Indian quinine, squaw vine, or twinberry.

How Do You Take Care Of Them?

It's easy to take care of them. Give it plenty of sunlight and water it regularly. If you are growing them in a container, ensure the soil has good drainage so that excess water doesn't pool around the roots.

How Much Sunlight Can They Take?

They can tolerate full sun but will look better with some shade in the afternoon. If you live in an area with hot summers, try planting yours under taller trees or shrubs for sun protection.

Do They Come Back Up Every Year?

They come back up every year from their roots, which is why they need to be planted in a place where they won't be disturbed by digging or tilling nearby (such as in your garden).

What Does A Mitchella Repens Look Like?

It is a beautiful, low-growing plant that can grow to about 1 foot tall. It has small, heart-shaped leaves that are light green and produces pinkish flowers in the spring.

Where Do They Grow?

They can be found in many climates and regions worldwide. In the United States, you'll find it growing in woodlands or meadows in the eastern part of the country. You may find it hanging onto rocks or growing along streamsides in other parts of the world.

What Are The Environments In Which They Grow?

They grow in many environments, including forests, woodlands, and mountainsides. They prefer soil rich with organic matter but are picky about what type of soil they're planted in. They also like moist environments but will tolerate dry conditions as well.

Are They Toxic?

They are not poisonous or toxic to humans or animals when ingested orally or absorbed into the body.

How To Grow Mitchella Repens

Plant yours in spring or early summer when all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up enough for planting. Dig a hole as wide as your pot and add some compost to improve the quality of the soil. Carefully place this plant in the hole so that just a little bit of its root ball sticks out above ground level. Water this plant thoroughly after planting and mulch it to keep moisture levels high during dry periods throughout the summer months.

How Do You Care For Them?

When caring for Mitchella repens, you'll want to ensure that your plants get plenty of water and fertilizer. The best time to fertilize this plant is in early spring when you plant them.

How Did They Get Their Name?

This plant was named after John Mitchell, the friend of Carl Linnaeus.

Indians used Mitchella Repens to induce childbirth.
